Journal Information

Aims and scope

The International Journal of Odonatology (IJO) is the official peer-reviewed publication of the  Worldwide Dragonfly Association (WDA).It provides a high-quality international outlet for the growing global community of Odonata researchers. Since 2021, the journal has been published as a Diamond Open Access journal, meaning that articles are freely available to readers and that no article processing charges are levied on authors.

Focus & Subjects

The journal welcomes original research contributions addressing all aspects of Odonata biology, including but not limited to:

  • Ecology and behaviour

  • Physiology and genetics

  • Taxonomy and phylogenetics

  • Geographic distribution

Special Issues & Reviews

Review articles are mainly by invitation. However, authors planning to submit a review, or those interested in proposing a Special Issue on a thematic subject of significant interest to the odonatological community, are strongly encouraged to contact the Editor-in-Chief (ijoeditor@worlddragonfly.org).

Submission Scope & Constraints

  • Geographic focus: Purely faunistic studies of restricted geographic areas (highly localized surveys) or short natural history notes lacking a priori hypotheses or broader ecological or taxonomic implications fall outside the scope of IJO. Such contributions are better suited to our companion publication, Agrion, the WDA newsletter (agrion@worlddragonfly.org).

Nomenclature: Species must be referred to using the scientific name. The use of common names alone is not permitted. Where common names are included, they must appear only once, as a complement to the first mention of the scientific name.

Copyright and Open Access

IJO is a Diamond Open Access journal. All content is freely available without charge  to readers or their institutions. Users are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, and link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author/s. This policy is in accordance with the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI)definition of Open Access.

  • Licensing: Since 2021, all articles published in IJO articles are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
